“Galileo Galilei Science&Space Festival” in Frankfurt and Darmstadt (from 14th to 17th June 2023) – third edition –

From 14th to 17th June 2023, the third edition of the “Galileo Galilei Science&Space Festival will take place, a festival dedicated to the public dissemination of scientific topics and the promotion of the extraordinary network of Italian researchers in Italy and abroad.

This science festival, which is free and open to the public upon reservation, aims at testifying the leading role played by Italy in the field of science and technological research.

The third edition presents some changes: it will be held over four days, with an online opening and in-presence sessions on the following days in three different locations: the Riedberg Campus of the Goethe-Universität and the hall of the Frankfurter Kunstverein in Frankfurt, and again, as in previous years, the ESA-ESOC Press Centre in Darmstadt. The speakers will be Italian scientists and researchers working in leading universities and research centres, including in our consular district. The talks will be in Italian and English.

Let us now turn to the guests of the 2023 edition of the G&G Festival.  The festival will be opened by Nobel Prize-winner professor Giorgio Parisi, who on Wednesday 14th June at 6:45 p.m. via Zoom connection from Italy, will speak about In a Flight of Starlings. The Wonders of Complex Systems. Professors Alberica Toia and Luciano Rezzolla from Goethe-Universität Frankfurt will moderate the talk. On Thursday 15th June at 5.45 p.m., the Riedberg Campus of the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt  (Department of Physic- Main Lecture Hall 0.111) will host the lectio magistralis of Prof. Luca Amendola (Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg) dedicated to The World Algorithm, moderated by prof. Luciano Rezzolla.

The President of Goethe University, Prof. Dr. Enrico Schleiff, Consul General of Italy Mr. Andrea Sama and Dean of the Faculty of Physics, Prof. Dr. Roger Erb (J.W. Goethe Univ.) will bring their greetings to this lectio magistralis.

While on Friday 16th June at the Frankfurter Kunstverein, Dr. Paolo Ferri will present his latest book Le sfide di Marte – Storie di esplorazioni di un pianeta difficile, moderated by Isabella Buffacchi (IlSole24Ore) and Michele Santoriello (Cultural Office).

On Saturday, 17th June, the G&G Festival will move to Darmstadt, at the ESA-ESOC Press Centre, where, starting at 4.30 p.m., we will hear Dr. Ian Carnelli (ESA), who will present Mission Hera, the first concrete attempt to create a planetary defence system against asteroid impacts, moderated by Dr. Paolo Ferri; this will be followed by a lecture by Dr. Francesca Luoni (GSI-FAIR) on Cosmic Radiation: the invisible obstacle to space exploration (moderated by Dr. Federica Capellino), a breaking news report by Dr. Flavio Murolo of EUMETSAT, and finally a talk by Prof. Sara Buson (Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg) on Beginning a Journey across the Universe (moderated by Prof. Silvia Masciocchi).

A buffet with Italian products offered by the Consulate General of Italy in Frankfurt am Main will close the event.
